Lakshminarayana Global Music Festival

Dr. L. Subramaniam and the late Viji Subramaniam as a tribute to Dr. Subramaniam's father and guru Professor V. Lakshminarayana launched the Lakshminarayana Global Music Festival in 1992. Professor V. Lakshminarayana belonged to the Guru-Shishya Parampara (Master-Disciple Tradition) of Sri Baluswamy Dikshitar, who is believed to have introduced the violin to the Indian Tradition. 

The Lakshminarayana Global Music Festival is unique because it is the only festival where eminent artists from around the globe perform on the same stage. Different cultural traditions blend harmoniously to spread the message of peace. The Lakshminarayana Global Music Festival has been held in India, the United States, Germany in conjunction with the Berlin Festival, Sri Lanka, Norway and. It has featured musicians from countries including: Baluchistan, China, Cuba, Denmark, Finland, Germany, India, Iran, Ivory Coast, Japan, Norway, Pakistan, Russia, Sweden, Senegal, UK and USA. Artists who have participated in the Lakshminarayana Global Music Festival include: Steven Seagal, Lord Yehudi Menuhin, Ustad Bismillah Khan, Ustad Allah Rakha, Pandit Kishan Maharaj, Arve Tellefsen, Pandit Ram Narayan, Ghulam Ali, Malavika Sarukai, Roar Engelberg, Iver Klieve, and Christian Eggen.

In 1997, the Lakshminarayana International award was instituted. The first award was given to Lord Yehudi Menuhin and was presented by The President of India, His Excellency Sri K. R. Narayanan. The other artists who received this award are Pandit V. G. Jog in 1999, Sri Semmangudi Srinivasa Iyer in 2001, Smt. M.S. Subbalakshmi in 2002 ,Jean Luc Ponty in 2003, Pt Jasraj in 2004, Al Jarreau, George Duke, Stanley Clarke and Arve Tellefsen in 2005, Ivry Gitlis and Pt Birju Maharaj in 2006.

So far LGMF has been conducted in the following countries.

AUSTRALIA, BAHRAIN, DUBAI, FRANCE, GERMANY, INDIA , KUWAIT , MALAYSIA, MAURITIUS, NORWAY, POLAND, QATAR, Re Union ISLAND, ROMANIA, SINGAPORE, SRILANKA , SWITZERLAND and USA.

The Government of India released a Commemorative Postage Stamp on Prof. V. Lakshminarayana as a tribute for his contribution to the World of Music.
