Lakshminarayana Global Music Festival

Dr. L. Subramaniam and the late Viji Subramaniam as a tribute to Dr. Subramaniam’s father and Guru Professor V. Lakshminarayana launched the Lakshminarayana Global Music Festival in 1992. In recognition of Professor V. Lakshminarayana’s contribution to Indian Music, the Government of India released a special commemorative Stamp and a special cover on him on 14th of April 2004.

The Lakshminarayana Global Music Festival is unique because it is the only festival where eminent artists from around the globe perform on the same stage. Different cultural traditions blend harmoniously to spread the message of peace. The Lakshminarayana Global Music Festival has been held in India, the United States, Germany (in conjunction with the Berlin Festival), Sri Lanka, France, Australia, Malaysia, Singapore and Norway.

It has featured musicians from countries including: Baluchistan, China, Cuba, Denmark, Finland, Germany, India, Iran, Ivory Coast, Japan, Norway, Pakistan, Russia, Sweden, Senegal, UK and USA.

Artists who have participated in the Lakshminarayana Global Music Festival include: Lord Yehudi Menuhin, Steven Seagal, Larry Coryell, Smt. M.S. Subbulakshmi, Ustad Bismillah Khan, Pandit Jasraj, Pandit Kishan Maharaj, Pandit Shiv Kumar Sharma, Ustad Amjad Ali Khan, Pandit Hari Prasad Chaurasia, Ustad Zakir Hussain, Arve Tellefsen, Pandit Ram Narayan, Jean Luc Ponty, Billy Cobham, Ghulam Ali Khan Saheb, Malavika Sarukai, Roar Engelberg, Iver Klieve, Knut Reirsrud and Christian Eggen.

In 1997, the Lakshminarayana International award was instituted. The first award was given to Lord Yehudi Menuhin and was presented by The President of India, His Excellency Sri K. R. Narayanan. The award was subsequently given to Smt. M.S. Subbulakshmi, Sri Semmangudi Srinivasa Iyer, Ustad Bismillah Kham, Pandit V. G. Jog, Pandit Jasraj and Jean Luc Ponty.

The Lakshminarayana Global Music Festival 2005 (fusion segment) will feature Dr. L. Subramaniam and Kavita Krishnamurti Subramaniam along with some of the greatest Jazz musicians from the American music scene including bass genius Stanley Clarke and piano legend George Duke. In New Delhi, special guests include multiple platinum and multiple Grammy award winning Artist Al Jarreau, legendary guitarist Earl Klugh and Saxophonist Ravi Coltrane. It will also feature Seetaa Subramaniam, versatile Danish musicians Kim Menzer, Mikkel Nordsoe and Fridolin Nordsoe along with five Indian musicians. This follows a recent concert at the Lincoln Center, New York featuring Dr. Subramaniam, Kavita Krishnamurti Subramaniam, George Duke, Stanley Clarke and Seetaa Subramaniam, the success of which inspired this tour. Both Clarke and Duke are featured on Dr. Subramaniam’s new fusion album, while the collaboration between Clarke and Duke began decades ago. This series of concerts promises to be historical.
