| DOUBLE CONCERTO (For Violin and flute) |
|
This was the first orchestral commission L. Subramaniam received from the new American Orchestra, based in Los Angles in 1983. It was premiered at the Dorothy Chandler Pavillion Music Center in Los Angeles where the composer was the violin soloist and Mr. Hubert Laws was the flute soloist. Since its premiere it has received great critical acclaim and has been performed with several leading orchestras around the world. This is based on a 'neo-fusion' idiom, created by the composer in the early 70's taking the best of both Eastern and Western Classical systems of music. Though the piece is based on three movements (fast, slow and fast), the elements of the first movement also appear in the other movements thus creating a new form using both the Western Concerto and the Indian 'Kriti' form. (The Kriti is one of the most popular compositional forms in the traditional Carnatic system of South India. There are solo improvisational sections in each movement in which the Indian violin soloist improvises using the microtonal, modal system whilst the Western soloist uses the tempered system of Western classical music. There is a very strong blend of the tempered and microtonal systems with a poly-rythmic structure which is a very unique and original trademark of the composer. There are modal passages which alternate with passages rich in harmony, the harmony being derived from the mode itself (implied harmony). There are certain original concepts based on some traditional South Indian ones such as powerful trade-offs of musical phrases starting with a one-bar phrase between the soloist and the Orchestra which gradually expands into a longer phrase and the reverse process occurs till the tradeoff is nothing more than a single note. This process is reversed again with the phrase increasing in length till it reaches the original starting phase. This occurs during the development section of the first movement. There are segments with poly-rhythms and complicated rhythmic patterns created by the Indian soloist and the rhythmic accompaniment. The cadenzas in all the three movements are completely improvised based on the modal system by the Indian violin soloist along with the Indian percussion accompaniment |
