‘Visions of India’ is the brainchild of Dr. L. Subramaniam. This is the first time that different traditional vocal styles including the very colourful folk traditions are being brought together on the same platform along with Classical music, Bollywood Music, Ghazal and Fusion. This is a concept incorporating different styles of music from different parts of the country. It is arranged with modern and traditional instruments and also includes traditional percussion from different parts of India.
The unique feature of this concept is Dr. Subramaniam’s specially written composition which features these different artists from around the country, showcasing each artist’s individualism and special flavour. The climax of the composition interweaves Dr. Subramaniam’s playing with the voices of India singing a patriotic salute to India.
‘Visions of India’ incorporates the following vocal styles of India:
• Karnatic (South Indian Classical) by Dr. M. Balamuralikrishna
• Bollywood (Hindi Film) by Kavita Krishnamurti Subramaniam
• Ghazal by Pankaj Udhas
• Punjabi Folk and Sufi Music by Richa Sharma
• Baul (Folk from Bengal) by Purno Das Baul Samrat
• Langa (Folk from Rajasthan) – by Sikander Langa and Party
• Fusion – Bindu Seetaa Subramaniam
This special composition will be supported by Keyboards, Guitar, Bass, Drums and Indian Percussion. This project is also being expanded to include dance from around the country.
The composition entitled Percussion Symphony showcases traditional percussion from around the country including Kerala percussion (Chendai, Mathalam, Shanku, Kombu), Karnataka folk percussion (Dollu, Ghata Gingari, Tamate, Nakara), South Indian (tavil, mridangam, ghatam, kanjira, moorsing), North Indian (tabla and dholak) and octopad. This composition features a special solo by Ambi Subramaniam.
In additional to being a unique musical experience, Visions of India is also a unique visual treat with each artist colourfully representing the part of India he/she hails from.
Visions of India will be held on December 25th, 2007 at the University Convocation Auditorium at 6:30pm. The concert is open to all on a first come first serve basis.
